THE TIME I DROWNED IN A LAND-LOCKED STATE

when it happened, i did not scream.
i did not kick as
i disappeared below the surface.

my joints ached.
i was tired of fighting
and i was so far from home.

if you saw it,
you wouldn’t have recognized it.
it was a quiet event.
there was salt on my skin.

somewhere, a seagull laughed.
